Healthy Eating and Living Habits for Kids

It is very important for kids to have healthy living habits, as it not only helps them maintain good health, but is also helps them improve their lifestyle. In this article, we will discuss some healthy eating and living habits for kids. 

Healthy eating habits
  • Take right breakfast: Breakfast is an important meal of the day. Skipping breakfast can leave the child with low energy that affects his/her concentration at school. Taking wrong breakfast like sugary cereals, cake, junk food, etc., is a bad habit and is not good for health. Breakfast that is rich in proteins and fiber is recommended for breakfast.
  • Involving children in shopping for food and preparing of meals: By involving children in food shopping, you will get to know the kind of food the child prefers. Based on the choices you can teach your child which food is healthy and, which is not. Moreover, if your children help you while preparing food, they will be more willing to and eat the food.
  • Children should be encouraged to eat slowly: Children usually want to finish their meal quickly as they are in a hurry to either play with their friends or watch their favorite cartoon program. But this is not a good practice because quickly finishing the food may make the child obese, whereas eating slow helps in digestion.
  • Eating snacks or meals while watching TV should be discouraged: Sitting in front of the TV and eating is difficult to understand whether the child had sufficient food or not. Better to switch off the TV.
  • Planning for snacks: Give your child snacks that are healthy like fruits, nuts, protein bars, etc. Avoid giving them snacks that are unhealthy like chips, junk food, fried food, etc. Plan a schedule for snack time.
  • Give fruits and vegetables: Include fruits and vegetables as a part of healthy diet, as it will help in growth and development of your child.
Healthy living habits
  • Focusing on extra curricular activities: Extra curricular activities help the child to explore his/her skills and talents which increases their confidence level. Encourage them to be a part of a football team or learn music lessons, dance lessons, fine arts, etc.
  • Ensure that the school offers daily physical education: Programs of physical education should be offered in school as it increases fitness, physical strength
  • Technologies should be turned off: Technologies like iPad, computer games, video games, phones and other gadgets should not be used extensively by children. Ask them to sit with family members and send some time with them.

Requirement of vitamins during teenage is high because of many hormonal changes that take place during this stage. Especially for girls, iron and vitamin B complex is required in high amounts.

Requirement of vitamins differs between boys and girls. Some vitamins are important for boys and some for girls.

Vitamins help in maintaining healthy skin, proper vision, proper functioning of nervous system, protection against diseases, supply of oxygen to brain by producing more red blood cells, etc.

During this stage teenagers are more concerned about their skin and hair. This article is about the role of vitamins that help in maintaining healthy skin and hair.

Vitamins for healthy and glowing skin – Vitamins A, C, E, B along with selenium help in making the skin look younger and also prevent from damage due to exposure to sun. These vitamins function as antioxidants and prevent cells from damage. Oxygen plays an important role in maintaining healthy cells.

Vitamin B complex helps in producing new cells and supply of oxygen to cells. Vitamin C helps in producing skin tissues called collagen, which is important to hold skin tightly to prevent aging. Foods containing antioxidants such as milk, eggs, peaches, leafy vegetables, red berries, bell peppers, broccoli, etc., help in maintaining glowing skin.

Vitamins that help hair growth – Vitamin B complex, C, A and E are effective for long and thick hair. Vitamin A and C reduces hair loss due to pollution and strengthens roots of hair, whereas vitamin B complex prevents whitening of hair at early, prevents hair loss and promotes long hair. Vitamin E helps in reducing split ends and loss of hair.

Vitamins for boys – Teenage boys are mostly worried about their muscle growth. Vitamin D is the best vitamin for body building. It helps in absorption of calcium, which is important for bones. Vitamin A reduces pimples in teens with oily skin by reducing secretions of oil glands.

Vitamin for girls - Girls needs vitamin B complex and iron in higher amounts as they undergo many hormonal changes, they lose iron during menstrual cycles. So it is important to eat foods that contain iron.

Eating foods like tomatoes, bell peppers, pink grape fruit, salmon, sardines, etc., prevent skin damage due to UV light. UV light helps in skin tissue formation and holds the skin tightly preventing wrinkle formation.

Most teens skip their breakfast and pay less attention to their diet, which affects their health. Multivitamin supplements can be taken daily along with proper and healthy diet to make sure that the body gets the required vitamins.

  • When you are traveling with kids or pet, you should not leave them unattended in your vehicle and do not leave your windows down. Ensure that your children should not play in or around the car.
  • You should always lock the car doors and windows, while traveling and also even at home, because the child may open the locks easily.
  • When any infant is in sleep do not overlook at him/her.
  • You should not let your children to roam inside your car while driving.
  • Never let your children have sharp objects, large toys or balloons or food because if you stop suddenly that could be dangerous and may block your vision when you are in drive.
  • When you are traveling with kids or pets don't drink hot beverages, because if you have to stop suddenly that may fall on them or yourself.
  • It is essential to keep a first aid kit while traveling with kids or pets. It should contain antiseptic cream, eye drops, tweezers, tape, bandages, gauge, etc. and also you should able to supply your own fresh water.
  • Never allow your kids or pets to ride with its head outside the window, it is very dangerous as your kids or pets may have health problems by the dirt particles that get into their ears, eyes, nose, and throat and it also very dangerous that the passer-by vehicles may hit their head cause fatal injury.
  • It is a sensible idea, if you are planning to stop once in every two hours for stretching yourself as well as for your kids and pest, you should make sure that your pet is in your control.
  • You should not let the child or pet to sit in your lap while driving, it may be very dangerous as they can jump or fall to the floor at any time.
