Application Software is a collection of computer programs that help in performing specific tasks given by the user. It is a sub class of computer software that serves the capabilities of computer and performs the tasks. Application software is present above the systems software. In order to run the tasks on application software it requires an operating system and system utilities present at low level.
Application software includes database programs, word processors, spread sheets, web browsers; graphics that are used for general purpose and the tasks that are used for multiple purposes such as business related tasks, accounting, scientific and industrial tasks are called as specific purpose application software.
Application software is different from system software. The system software consists of low level programs that interact with basic level of computer that helps the computer to start and run. These include operating system, compilers and linkers for programming tools that translate the code and libraries into executable program.
