History Of The Earth Day

Earth Day is a name used for two different observances, both held annually during spring in the northern hemisphere, and autumn in the southern hemisphere. These are planned to inspire awareness of and admiration for the Earth's environment. The United Nations celebrates an Earth Day each year on the March equinox, a custom which was founded by peace campaigner John McConnell in 1969. A second Earth Day, which was founded by US politician Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in the late 1960s, is eminent in many countries each year on April 22. In September 1969, at a meeting in Seattle, Washington, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson announced that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots show on the environment. Senator Nelson first proposed the nationwide environmental complaint to thrust the environment onto the national agenda.” "It was a gamble," he recalls, "but it worked."

Five months before the first April 22 Earth Day, on Sunday, November 30, 1969, The New York Times passed a lengthy article by Gladwin Hill reporting on the rising tide of environmental events: "Rising concern about the environmental disaster is sweeping the nation's campuses with an concentration that may be on its way to eclipsing student discontent over the war in Vietnam...a national day of observance of environmental problems...is being planned for next spring...when a nationwide environmental 'teach-in'...coordinated from the office of Senator Gaylord Nelson is planned...." Senator Nelson also hired Denis Hayes as the coordinator.

Each year, the April 22 Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Among other things, 1970 in the United States brought with it the Kent State shootings, the advent of fiber optics, "Bridge over Troubled Water," Apollo 13, the Beatles' last album, the death of Jimi Hendrix, and the meltdown of fuel rods in the Savannah River nuclear plant near Aiken, South Carolina an incident not acknowledged for 18 years. At the time, Americans were slurping leaded gas through massive V8 sedans. Industry belched out smoke and slush with little fear of legal penalty or bad press. Air pollution was normally accepted as the smell of wealth. Environment was a word that appeared more frequently in spelling bees than on the evening news. But Earth Day 1970 turned that all around. On April 22, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. Denis Hayes, the national coordinator, and his youthful staff organized massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities prepared protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.

The Victoria Cross of British Empire

The Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest military decoration awarded for valour "in the face of the enemy" to members of the armed forces of some Commonwealth countries and previous British Empire territories. It takes priority over all other orders, decorations and medals. It may be awarded to a person of any rank in any service and civilians under military command, and is obtainable to the recipient by the British monarch during an investiture held at Buckingham Palace. It is the joint highest award for courage in the United Kingdom with the George Cross, which is the corresponding honor for valour not in the face of the enemy.

The Victoria Cross was presented January 29, 1856 by Queen Victoria to reward for the acts of bravery during the Crimean War. Since then the medal 1.356 times were allotted to 1.353 various recipients. Only 13 medals, nine with the British army and four with the Australian army were allotted since the beginning of the Korean War. The traditional explanation of the source of the gunmetal of what the medals are struck is that it derives from the Russian gun captured with the head office of Sevastopol.. Recent research threw the doubt about this history, suggesting a variety of origins. Because of its rarity, the VC are strongly estimated and the medal can reach more than £400.000 with the bidding. There are a certain number of public and private collections devoted to him, in particular that of Ashcroft lord, who contains more than one tenth of all allotted VCs.

Biological War - More Dangerous Than Nuclear Weapons

After the nuclear warfare, the most powerful warfare is the biological warfare. This type of war fare is used far before the invention of nuclear bombs. Though there was not much technology to invent new type of virus in those times, they still were successful to harm the enemy by using whatever was existing. The major form of biological warfare used to be poisoning the water sources where the enemies have possibilities to use them; and then using microorganisms, toxins or animals in a weapon system and by using biologically inoculated fabrics. It was aid that the enemies who were imprisoned during a war were used to conduct experiments by the prevailing scientists at that time. Imagine throwing 1000 persons in a small dump where there will be hardly any place to stand and then throwing terrific toxins or virus on them.

In the biological warfare they use pathogens like bacterium or virus or any kind of toxins as weapons. The main thing that makes the biological warfare more powerful than nuclear war is that it won’t kill a person at once. It starts eating the inner or the outer matter slowly making the death more devastating.

We had probably heard a disease called Anthrax in recent times. Well even that falls in this category.
