Gift Your Child a Homemade Glow Stick

Every one are excited about glow sticks. Especially kids like them a lot and love to play with them. Those are the things they might be looking for, while visiting any carnivals and circuses. They are mostly attracted by the light produced by these glow sticks, kids of higher age group mostly from high schools like the chemistry are seriously involved in it. With lots of interest and fun involved in playing with them they really want to have at least a couple of them. If they get some glow sticks as a gift from near and dear they are even more excited about it. So, why don't you surprise your kids by presenting them with a home made glow stick. You can even show them how to make it.

So, lets us take a look on how to make home made glow stick

Ingredients Required:
  • 2 liters of distilled water
  • 1 bottle of Hydrogen peroxide
  • 4 grams of Sodium Carbonate
  • 4 grams of Copper Sulphate Penta hydrate
  • 2 grams of Luminol
  • 2 large glass bowls

Procedure:
  • Take two large glass bowls. Add 1 liter of distilled water and 1 bottle of Hydrogen peroxide to the first bowl.
  • Now add another liter of distilled water, 4grams of sodium carbonate, and 4 grams of copper sulphate penta hydrate to the second bowl.
  • Mix all the ingredients of second bowl properly and then add 2 grams of luminol to it.
  • Now carefully combine the liquids of the two bowls.
  • The moment you combine them you can see glow in the liquid.
  • Transfer the glowing solution to clear plastic tubes of different sizes and shapes to make attractive glow sticks.

  • While dealing with all the chemical substances used in the preparation of glow sticks some precautions should be taken to make the preparation successful.
  • Wear hand gloves and apron.
  • Always use glass or ceramic vessels to mix the solution, but not the metal ones.
  • Keep this solution out of reach of children.
  • Don't try to touch the flowing liquid.
  • Keep it away from pets. It will cause harmful effects when consumed even accidentally.
