Helpful Tips for Preventing Dust Mites in Pillows

Dust mites are little microscopic creatures that hide in every place of your home especially indoors (your bed room). They live in humid temperature and also wherever they get plenty of food such as mold spores, dead skin cells from humans as well as animals. These dust mites can cause asthma, and allergies.

Most of us spend our time in our bedroom for sleeping to take rest. The bed sheets, pillows, mattress and covers all contain dust mites if you are not washing them regularly. These dust mites can cause problems such as watery eyes, runny nose and sneezing, coughing and other breathing problems, skin rash and itching in humans as well as animals.

The following are some helpful tips for preventing dust mites in the pillows:
  • First, consider to use dust-proof or allergen-blocking covers to cover your mattress and pillows. These covers will prevent dust mites from colonizing in the mattress or pillows.
  • Once a week, wash all your bed sheets, blankets, pillowcases and bed covers in hot water that is at least 130° F (54.4° C) to kill dust mites and remove allergens. If some of your bedding cannot be washed in hot temperatures, you can kill dust mites by freezing the items for 24 hours.
  • Never use the bed sheets or pillow cases that absorb dust easily.
  • Always vacuum beneath the mattresses and pillows.
  • Maintain lower humid temperatures in your home that is below 70°F.
  • Always case your pillows and mattress with a plastic covers which prevent dust mites from entering. It is very important to clean encasement each time that you change your sheets or remove them to be washed. You should also wash your encasement in hot water.
