Differences Between SMS and MMS

Unlike the ancient times, one can send the message within seconds by the use of present technologies. For the communication to be done effectively, there are various types of messaging services.

The main function in any messaging service is texting. The services which are mainly used for messaging are SMS and the MMS services.

SMS service will be termed as the short messaging service or texting. By using the service providers service, one can send message from one mobile to other mobile. Unless the service provider offers this service, one cannot send a message. Now-a-days, all the mobiles in the market are provided with this service. Most of users prefer this SMS service. In general, there will be a character limit for sending the SMS, and it will be of 164 characters. One can send the message by typing the text using the alphabets, symbols and numbers, and also images. Here, the message centers are used for sending the messages. Even if the sending of the message fails for sending, then in those cases the message center will try to resend the information. Although the risks like spoofing and spamming are involved, this type of service is mostly used.

MMS service is defined as the multimedia messaging service. When compared with the SMS, this service is some what advanced because by using this service one can send the message by using the text as well as the videos and the images. Unlike SMS, this service is not provided in all the mobile phones. This is used for sending the photos. When compared with the SMS this service is often considered as the entertainment medium. This is some what costly when compared with the other types of services. Here, initially the messages are sent to the message centers and from then through the internet medium it will reach the recipient.

If the MMS service is not available to the recipient then the message can be viewed in the web browser.

Thus, both are used for providing non voice communication services from one mobile to mobile. But, most of the mobile users have the features of SMS rather than the MMS service.
