Know About Different Kinds of Roofing for Home Improvement

The process of renovating or making additions to one's home is termed as home improvement or home renovation or home remodeling. Conservatories, orangeries, glass garden rooms, sun rooms and many others are a part of home improvement. Various kinds of materials are used for their construction and internal decoration. Let us know about different kinds of roofing involved in home improvement.


Translucent Flat Roofs:
The fitting of a translucent flat roof can be done quickly. When the supporting timbers are kept in place, the roofing material can be attached immediately. In a translucent roof, glass could be laid with support materials such as corrugated plastic or flat multiwalled polycarbonate.

Opaque Roofs:
Opaque materials such as corrugated sheet metal, plastic or fiberglass can be used for roofing. However, a plastic version may degrade over time and cracks may also occur on the sheet when holes are drilled. So it is better to use bitumen which is long-lasting. However, a supporting layer of sheet timber such as plywood is required.

Pitched Roofs:
A pitched roof is a special design of roofing which looks great. Extra loft space is given by a pitched roof which gives the light and airy feel. However the cost of these roofing is much higher.

Glass Roofs:
When conservatory is constructed as a part of home improvement, then a glass roofing is chosen. A brick-built extension can also be fitted with glass roof.

Based on the design of home improvement, the type of roofing has to be selected. Roofing can be done by shake, shingles, flat or raised metal, and tiles with various shapes and designs. Different materials can be used for roofing such as asphalt, wood, clay, steel and slate.

Asphalt shingles are the most commonly used materials for roofing. When a wood shingles or shakes are chosen, care should be taken that they are treated with fire-retardant chemicals. Metal roofs include copper, steel, aluminum and others. The advantage of using them is their resistance to fire and requirement of less maintenance. Materials such as tiles and slate are highly fire resistant and need no replacement.
