Know How to Help your Teen Quit Smoking

Smoking is a common habit for most of the teens in the United States. Though they know that it is associated with many dangerous health effects, they do not try to avoid it. However, it is your responsibility as a parent to help them quit smoking. Here are some yips on how to help tour teen quit smoking.
  • Inculcate a habit of writing guidelines to stop smoking. Ask them to stick the paper in their room so that they can see it daily. If necessary they can even add some points to them.
  • It is known that they get attracted to the habit of smoking because of peers. Make them understand the health effects of smoking.
  • Ask them to throw away all the cigarettes, ash trays, and lighters. If they are left in their room, they again get influenced to smoke. So better check their room daily.
  • Also, be careful to avoid them from moving out with some friends who are habituated to smoking.
  • Be a good example. If you yourself stop smoking, then your kids will even follow it. If possible, explain the bad consequences that you or your friends have faced because of frequent smoking.
  • Set strict guidelines to quit smoking even at parties and other celebrations.
  • Try to make them learn certain good and healthy habits like exercising and so on to distract away from smoking. They also help in minimizing any harmful side effects on their health.
  • Ensure that your teen is always active. Engage them with some or the other activity to keep their mind away from smoking. If they are left idle, then they even try to get back to smoking.
  • Contact with a healthcare professional or a doctor along with your teen to understand the effects better. An effective counseling can even change your kid's mind.

If you follow these tips, you can be successful in helping your teens to quit smoking. It therefore reduces your worries on their health and career.
