Is it Beneficial to Hire Overqualified?

Many companies or the recruiting departments are always in the dilemma whether to hire over qualified people or not. Even though the job profile demands such a kind of person they fear to hire them for various reasons, may it be high pay or the stability factor. Overqualified does not always mean that the person is possessing higher educational qualification which is not required for that particular job, it also means that the people with more experience in the respective field and the people who have worked in higher designations in their previous company. Let us discuss the advantages as well as the disadvantages of hiring over qualified people.
Benefits of overqualified hires:
  • Experience can be considered as the factor to give excellent training to the new joiners and the people who are working. This way the company can save expenses on training managers. Moreover, as the person is already experienced he/she doesn't need training.
  • Can play major roles and is able to handle huge responsibilities.
  • Overqualified people tend to approach the job differently and are able to think beyond the role and see other issues and possibilities.
  • They can easily get adapted to the work culture and nature of work and can add quick value to the role.
  • The contact list of the experienced people could generate effective leads to the organizations to fill up the responsible positions.
Disadvantages:
  • Over qualified people with great experience lack the passion for work as they did many such things and may get easily bored from the regular work.
  • There is a chance of attitudinal issues when it comes to work. Especially when they are meant to work with people of low experience but still are in high roles.
  • Common and the most practical thing will be the payment issue. They generally look for the company who can pay more than their previous job and hence catering the payment needs of an over qualified person is always a challenging task for the management.
  • If those people are not satisfied with any of the processes in the company, they never hesitate to leave the job at any time and hence are less loyal to the organization.
  • Over experience are often over aged they are not active as the younger generation and often tend to delay things. This effects their productivity.
These are few advantages as well as the disadvantages of hiring over qualified and over experienced. However, it is obvious that we need to loose some thing to get some thing.
